David Cochrane
Director and co-founder of Conrane Consulting

David Cochrane is a senior consultant specialising in healthcare strategy, process re-engineering and workforce roles and planning.

His current and recent projects include:

  • developing the community matron role and associated systems across 18 Primary Care Trusts (PCT);
  • reviewing current PCT networks against the long-term conditions agenda, including service and workforce redesign and costed workforce plans;
  • developing workforce strategies in acute services for three large PFI business cases and in primary care for several PCTs;
  • developing service for longer-term conditions in three PCTs in West Yorkshire;
  • designing core professional roles in community and acute ward-based services;
  • supporting primary care development across the UK;
  • developing and leading Action Learning Sets in Workforce Development in a wide range of NHS organisations including the most recent project with Keele University.

He has developed disease management pathways with Castlefields and three other clients in ten prevalent and severe conditions includingcoronary heart disease, diabetes I and II, depression, schizophrenia and elective orthopaedics. He works internationally in transitional countries as a consultant to the World Bank and also in Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

David has over 15 years experience in consulting (including posts with Price Waterhouse and Ernst and Young). He co-founded Conrane Consulting with Margaret Conroy in 1991. He holds a PhD in Health Administration from the London School of Economics and is a Senior Fellow in Health Services Management at the Keele University. He co-authored (with Margaret Conroy) the ‘Future Healthcare Workforce Reports’ (published in 1996, 1999 and 2002) and the book ‘Managed Care and Modernisation’ (Oxford University Press) in 2002.
