Margaret Conroy
Director and co-founder of Conrane Consulting
Margaret Conroy is a senior healthcare consultant with extensive experience right across the human resource agenda. She held senior posts in human resource (HR) management and planning with one of the former Thames Regions and also with the NHS Executive (where she was involved with strategic HR issues including workforce planning and education and training).
Margaret’s consultancy interests include:
- Organisation development and the design of new structures and roles;
- Workforce planning to align workforce plans with service configurations and delivery systems;
- The design of new roles and new ways of working around evidence-based care pathways;
- Education and training, including the strategic use of national workforce competence frameworks and occupational standards.
She was project director for the national project ‘Future Healthcare Workforce’ which developed scenarios for the workforce required in 10 years’ time and has driven Department of Health policy reform in New Ways of Working. She has extensive experience of working with medical, nursing, allied health professionals and other professional staff at ward/unit level in reviews of the workforce profile and the care process to identify the scope for improved efficiency and effectiveness. The outcomes from this work provide the framework for the design of new roles to reflect service needs.
Margaret has considerable experience in the development and application of National Workforce Competence Frameworks for Skills for Health; she has completed six: Breast Cancer Screening, Radiography, Radiotherapy, Supportive and Palliative Care, Chemotherapy and Cystoscopy and Prostate Biopsy.
Her current and recent projects include:
- development of a workforce plan (including the redesign of working arrangements and roles) for a new hospital for Sperrin Lakeland Trust in Northern Ireland. This project has now been extended to community services so that the workforce plan will be required to reflect patient flows across health and social services;
- development of workforce plans for Diagnostic Services in line with the major reconfiguration of services in Bedfordshire and West Hertfordshire;
- leading a team to deliver training in workforce planning and development for the constituent organisations of West Yorkshire Workforce Development Confederation.
She is an Executive Partner of Conrane Consulting which she co-founded with David Cochrane in 1991. She has an MA in Human Resource Management and is a Member of the Institute of Personnel and Development.
